How to Save Money : Mistakes to Avoid when Creating a Household Budget
Creating your household budget the first time and sticking to it can be daunting. Don’t feel bad if you stumble. Based on the experience of the experts in debt management at Credit Counselors, here are a few common mistakes to look out for:
Spending too much cash. It’s very easy to forget how often you’ve hit the ATM’s. Try using debit cards and checks in the beginning as much as possible, since it’s easier to keep track of them. Just don’t forget to keep those debit receipts! Later, once you’ve got a well-established budget going, it may actually be better to limit yourself to cash for spending.
Being over-strict. When you’ve discovered the benefits of saving money, you may find yourself cutting every expense in sight. However, while feeling motivated is a good thing, you don’t want to overdo it and come to resent too many restrictions. Make sure your new household budget includes a reasonable amount for activities you enjoy, so that you and your family don’t decide “budget = boring.”
Spending windfalls. When unexpected cash – such as a tax rebate, for example -- falls into your hands, it’s tempting to think, “Hey, if I spend this, it doesn’t affect my budget.” Better to put yourself that much further ahead by depositing windfalls into a savings account or paying off a bill.
Most of all, don’t beat yourself up when you make mistakes, and don’t decide that it’s impossible. Changing any long-established habit is difficult. Identify your mistake and move forward with a positive attitude.
But if you feel you truly can’t stick to that household budget, don’t give up. There is help available. The professionals in consumer credit counseling at Credit Counselors are specially trained to help you identify your goals and put together a household budget that will get you there.
